A trio of new Blackbirds led the way for LIU (3-2) - freshman Masa Zirojevic held he team lead in kills with a season-best 15 while transfers Julia Azevedo and Nina Petranovic each had 11 kills. Petranovic earned her third double-double of the young season by adding 14 digs and Zirojevic claimed her first with 14 digs of her own. Freshman Piper Matsumoto set up 31 of LIU's 46 kills, sophomore Natalia Rivera led four Blackbirds in double-digit digs (34, team season best) and sophomore Katharina Krepper had a part in 11 blocks (three solo, eight assisted). LIU led the match after taking a sloppy first set that saw both teams produce a .000 hitting percentage (19 total kills and errors on 84 attempts). Hofstra would respond by winning set two despite LIU taking a 12-10 lead on a Petranovic kill near the midpoint of the set. The Pride took a 2-1 lead over LIU after leading set by as many as five (17-12). The Blackbirds had a chance to win the set after using a 10-4 run to take over the lead, 22-21, but Hofstra went 4-1 the rest of the way to secure its edge. With the game in the balance, LIU came out swinging in the fourth, going on an impressive 11-0 run to begin the set and going wire-to-wire to even the match at 2-2. Unfortunately, LIU couldn't keep up that same pace in the deciding set, failing to take a lead in the fifth after an Azevedo kill tied the set at 1-1. NEXT UP LIU plays a pair of matches on Saturday, September 2 as part of the GW Invitational. The Blackbirds and the host Colonials will face off at Noon and LIU will meet Indiana at 7pm.
