The victory was LIU's fourth in a row and sixth straight in NEC openers dating back to 2012. Leading the way for the Blackbirds were junior Viktoria Fink (match-high 21 kills and 13 digs), sophomore Filippa Hansson (13 kills, match-best .355 hitting percentage), junior NIna Petranovic (12 kills, 11 digs), freshman Piper Matsumoto (match-high 42 assists), and sophomore Natalia Rivera (match-leading 33 digs). For the second match in a row, LIU found itself having to battle back from a deficit in sets. CCSU, which was playing in its home opener after 11 straight road matches to start the season, used their home crowd to their advantage and took the first set. The period was the closest of the five, with both teams combining for 11 ties and five lead changes. The Blackbirds' final lead came at 21-20 after forcing the Blue Devils into an attack error out of a timeout. However, CCSU would close out the set with a 5-1 run. LIU responded to falling behind by taking the next two sets. In the second, the Blackbirds reversed an early 8-7 CCSU lead into 14-8 LIU edge and never looked back. While the third set was a bit more hotly contested (seven ties, one lead change), it played out the same way as the previous set - a Blue Devil lead (11-10), a momentum shifting run (7-3 by LIU) and an eventual win for a 2-1 match lead. Central Connecticut again used its home court advantage to propel its team, denying LIU's chance to close out the match with a fourth set in which the hosts never trailed. With the deciding set being the difference between extending or snapping its aforementioned streaks, the Blackbirds' performance secured the former would occur. CCSU led 2-1 after an LIU ball handling error but like its other winning sets, the Blackbirds would use a strong run to take back control. A 5-0 surge from the visitors - capped by a kill from Fink - made the score 6-2 and gave LIU a lead they would not lose en route to victory.
