Siena Slips Past Women's Soccer BROOKLYN, N.Y. --- Despite a solid team performance in their home opener, the LIU Brooklyn women's soccer team was unable to secure its first victory of the season, falling to the Siena College Saints 1-0 Friday evening at LIU Field. The Blackbirds and Saints were calculated in their defensive efforts and offensive chances throughout the match, which magnified any misstep either team made. LIU played Siena to a scoreless first half and was poised to increase its chances to break through in the second. However, Siena would beat the Blackbirds to the punch by netting the eventual game winner 50 seconds into the latter period. LIU's sense of urgency was evident in its play after the score by the Saints' Gabby Albano. The Blackbirds outshot Siena 10-9 and produced twice as many opportunities as they did in the first (five shots in the first). LIU's best chances to tie the match came in a nearly ten-minute stretch that saw redshirt senior Jenn Peters, junior Marian Awad and freshmen Brittany Fazin & Kimberly Butland each take strong shots that simply couldn't find the back of the net. Each of those four players, along with junior Madison Shockley, recorded at least two shots on goals in the game, with Awad leading all Blackbirds with four attempts. Senior goalkeeper Erin Harbison started her second game of the year and made three saves in 90 minutes of full time. NEXT UP LIU will play the second of four straight home games on Sunday, September 10 against Manhattan.
