Freshman Jeydah Johnson and graduate transfer Denisha Petty-Evans each notched 16 points and senior DeAngelique Waithe added ten points to keep the Blackbirds (5-8, 1-1 NEC) in striking range of the two-time defending NEC champion Colonials (10-4, 3-0 NEC). LIU found themselves with the daunting task of climbing out of a 17-3 first quarter hole after the first six minutes of action. The Blackbirds were methodical in do so, using an 8-0 run over the final 3:43 to trim the Colonials' lead to six (17-11), cutting the deficit in half by halftime (24-21), and taking its only lead at the 7:23 mark of the third (25-24) after Petty-Evans scored the first four points of the period. RMU quickly regained the lead and extended it to 12 points by the opening minute of the fourth quarter but LIU refused to go away quietly. The Blackbirds outscored the Colonials 13-5 over the next 5:45 to bring themselves back to within four (51-47) with under three minutes remaining in the contest. However, Robert Morris did just enough to keep LIU from seizing control one final time and set the final margin with a 9-6 surge to close the game. OTHER NOTES Junior guard Paris Jones made her season debut against the Colonials, playing in her first live action since January 18, 2016 after missing 54 games due to injury. Jones played briefly in the second quarter and ended the game scoreless in one minute of action. Saturday was the eighth time in 13 games that the Blackbirds converted as many or more three-pointers than their opposition. LIU hit seven shots from distance compared to five for Robert Morris. Waithe added a game-high 14 rebounds for her fourth career double-double and second in as many games. Redshirt junior Drew Winter once again led the Blackbirds in assists with five, the 12th time in 13 games that Winter has held at least a share of the LIU lead in assists. NEXT UP LIU will remain in Pennsylvania and take on Saint Francis U. on Monday, January 8 at 6 p.m. in Loretto.
