Red Flash Monday evening at DeGol Arena. Senior DeAngelique Waithe recorded her third consecutive double-double after scoring a career-high 21 points and pulling down a game-high ten rebounds. Graduate transfer Denisha Petty-Evans netted 17 points and freshman Jeydah Johnson added 13 points on 4-for-9 shooting for the Blackbirds (5-9, 1-2 NEC) After Saint Francis (9-7, 4-0 NEC) scored the first five points of the contest, LIU netted six straight on a jumper from senior Stylz Sanders and free throws from Waithe and Petty-Evans. SFU retook the lead for good on a three-pointer and set the pace with a 28-15 run to close the quarter. Though LIU struggled against the Red Flash, the Blackbirds finished the game strong with a quality fourth quarter that saw LIU trail by only one point (17-16) over the final ten minutes. Winter and Petty-Evans each knocked down a pair of shots from distance and Winter and Jones hit two free throws each. OTHER NOTES Junior Paris Jones saw action in a second straight game and scored her first points of the season. Jones put up a team-high five points off the bench, hitting 1-for-3 from the field and 3-for-5 from the free throw stripe. Winter set a new career-best with ten assists to go along with her eight points. The last Blackbird to dish out ten or more assists was Shanice Vaughan, who had ten on January 30, 2016 against Fairleigh Dickinson. Despite the loss, LIU set a new team-high for assists with 18, besting the 16 the Blackbirds reached twice this year. NEXT UP LIU returns to Brooklyn with a pair of weekend games, beginning on Saturday, January 13 at 2 p.m. against Wagner.
