BRIDGEPORT, Conn.— The LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team dropped its Tuesday night matchup to Fairfield, 71-43 at the Webster Bank Arena.
The Stags started off strong with a 10-3 opening favor to start the game. LIU slowly chipped away as junior
Seneca Richards drained her first triple of the season at the 3:06 mark to cut the score to 12-8. A layup from freshman
Brandy Thomas in the final seconds brought the score to 14-10 and capped a 7-4 run for the Blackbirds to end the quarter.
LIU continued to play well keeping the Fairfield lead to within five through the opening minutes of the second quarter. A jumper by sophomore
Tia Montagne helped spark a 7-2 run by the Blackbirds with a triple from freshman
Shyla Sanford tying the game up at 21-21. The Stags would close out the half on a five-point run to take a 26-21 lead into the break.
The Blackbirds would draw the first point out of the half on a made free throw from freshman
Camille Gray but it was a 14-1 run by the Stags for the 35-22 advantage halfway through the third quarter. That advantage would hold the rest of the way as Fairfield would outscore LIU 23-10 in the final period for the 71-43 final.
Thomas the reigning NEC Rookie of the Week recorded her third straight double-double with career-high 16 points and 10 rebounds on the night. Sophomore
Ella Vaatanen and Richards finished the game with six points each.
