MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – The LIU Brooklyn men's basketball team suffered their second straight loss on the road Tuesday night, falling to the University of Milwaukee, 90-87 in overtime at the UWM Panther Arena. The Blackbirds (3-2) led by as many as ten points in the first half, but couldn't withstand a late surge by the Panthers (1-4). Junior
Jashaun Agosto led LIU with a career-high 25 points.
The Blackbirds took an early lead on the Panthers, and held on to it for most of the first stanza. LIU made a few big stops on defense as a part of a 7-0 run late in the half, that give the Blackbirds a 20-14 advantage. That run ended up extending into a 15-4 run that saw LIU go up, 28-18 with five minutes left in the half, forcing a Milwaukee timeout.
The home team worked on cutting the lead down for the remainder of the first half, and with help from LIU's foul trouble, they did, but the Blackbirds led, 33-29 heading into the break.
The Panthers kept it close in the second half, but every time they would make a run, LIU would answer with a big bucket that helped keep them at arm's length. Three minutes into the half, senior
Raiquan Clark would hit a three pointer that made it 42-36, and just a minute later, junior
Julian Batts hit a trey of his own to make it 47-39.
Junior
Jashaun Agosto would give LIU its widest lead of the second half at the 10:49 mark, when he made a driving layup, drew the foul, and made the extra point to put the Blackbirds up, 57-48. But just after the 10-minute mark, the Panthers would go on a scoring spree, putting up seven unanswered points in 44 seconds to cut the lead to just two points, 60-58.
LIU managed to stay on top, and a three pointer by sophomore
Ty Flowers gave the Blackbirds some breathing room, 72-64 with 4:38 to play. He also had a layup with just over a minute left that gave LIU a five-point lead, 76-71. But over the final minute of play, Milwaukee would score five points to tie it up, 76-76, and send the game into overtime.
But free throw shooting would come in clutch for the home team, as they would hit 10-10 of their shots from the line in the extra period, while the Blackbirds struggled to make a field goal. The two factors combined would spell the different in the contest, as Milwaukee took home the win, 92-87.
