BROOKLYN, N.Y.— The LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team fell in its home opener at the Steinberg Center, 57-42 to Army West Point on Friday night. 

The visiting Black Knights took control early in the first quarter with a 10-0 opening stretch. LIU was paced by first quarter scoring from sophomore Jeydah Johnson and freshman Brandy Thomas, who each tallied four points to cut the Army lead to 14-8 at the quarter break. 

LIU opened the second quarter with a 7-1 run on a pair of baskets from the duo of Johnson and Thomas and was capped by a three-pointer from sophomore Ella Vaatanen to tie the game up at 15-15. The Black Knights respond by closing the quarter with a 15-2 mark to take a 30-17 lead into the half. 

Army West Point continued to combat the Blackbirds in the third, outscoring LIU 19-14 in the quarter. The final period remained in favor of the visiting team before LIU closed out a five-point run on a three from Vaatanen and one final layup from Thomas for the 57-42 final. 

Thomas led the Blackbirds with her second straight double-double with a career-high 14 points and 12 rebounds. Johnson picked up double-digit points for the second straight game, finishing with 10 points. 

Up next, LIU opens a four-game road trek over the next two weeks beginning with a meeting at Fairfield on Tuesday, November 13 at 5:00 p.m. at Webster Bank Arena.

  • LIU recorded a season-high six blocks in the game. Thomas recorded a team-high three blocks for the Blackbirds.
