Women's Basketball Hosts NJIT For Holiday Sweater Game

BROOKLYN, N.Y.— The LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team welcomes NJIT to the Steinberg Center for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off to close out the fall semester. LIU will be getting into the holiday spirit with a "Holiday Sweater" theme, prizes will be available during the game for the fans with the best sweaters. 

QUICK HITS

  • The Blackbirds suffered a 83-38 loss to Michigan on Thursday night. LIU was held to a season-low 24.1% from the field by the Wolverine defense. Sophomore Jeydah Johnson led the Blackbirds in scoring with nine points. Freshman Shyla Sanford recorded a career-high six points and six rebounds. 
  • Sunday's matchup will be the eighth all-time between both teams. LIU holds the slight 5-3 advantage over the Highlanders. Last season, the Blackbirds earned a 67-49 victory in Newark on November 29, 2017. LIU shot over 40% in the victory as Denisha Petty-Evans led the team in scoring with 24 points and junior Seneca Richards finished with 12 points on 4-6 shooting from three. 
  • NJIT comes into Sunday's matchup with a 1-7 record under first-year head coach Mike Lane. The Highlanders enter the game well rested, having last hit the court a week ago. The team has a knack for getting to the free throw line, leading the Atlantic Sun with 166 free throw attempts on the season.
  • The Highlanders feature three scorers who average double figures, led by Kelly Guarino's 13.6 points per game. Ellyn Stoll and Danielle Tunstall both average 10.8 points per game. Tunstall is also the team's top rebounder with 7.1 boards per game.
