Pioneers in a 85-54 defeat Monday evening at the Steinberg Wellness Center. Petty-Evans bounced back from her lowest scoring tally of the season (one point against Robert Morris on February 10) to record her eighth game of the year with at least 18 points and 20th in double figures. Freshman Tia Montagne made the first start of her career and set a new season-best in her second straight game. After scoring six points against RMU, Montagne put up 12 points to reach double figures for the first time this season. Senior DeAngelique Waithe scored ten points for her fifth straight double-digit performance and 12th in her last 13 contests. Saint Francis (16-8, 11-1 NEC) opened the game with a pair of three pointers but were rebuffed by the Blackbirds with a four-and-a-half minute, 12-2 run that put LIU ahead 12-8 with 4:49 left in the first quarter. However, the Pioneers would close the period on a 15-0 run to push LIU's deficit into double figures, where it would remain for the rest of the game. OTHER NOTES Freshman Ella Vaatanen also set a new career high against the Pioneers, netting seven points on 3-of-6 shooting and eclipsing her six-point outing on January 20 at Bryant. Redshirt junior Drew Winter was ruled out of tonight's game, missing her first game of the year. LIU lost its first game of the season where the Blackbirds either tied or won the team rebounding battle (previously 4-0). LIU and SFU each pulled down 33 boards on the night. LIU shot 76.5 percent (13-of-17) from the free throw line against SFU, marking the seventh consecutive game the Blackbirds have made more than 70 percent of their attempts from the charity stripe. NEXT UP LIU will close the month with three straight road games, beginning with a local matchup at St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday, February 17. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game will air on ESPN3. Players Mentioned Bio DeAngelique Waithe #10 F 6' 0" Sr. Bio Drew Winter #11 G 5' 7" R-Jr. Bio Tia Montagne #5 G 5' 8" Fr.
