STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. --- The LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team settled for a split in the first two road games of February after losing to the Wagner Seahawks, 52-44, on Monday evening at the Spiro Sports Center.
Senior
DeAngelique Waithe's eighth double-double of the year (game-highs of 17 points and 11 rebounds) led the way for LIU (9-13, 5-6) while redshirt junior
Drew Winter and graduate transfer
Denisha Petty-Evans each chipped in ten.
Waithe scored six of LIU's eight points in a low-scoring first quarter that saw both teams combine for 14 points and the Blackbirds take an 8-6 lead after ten minutes.
Wagner (5-17, 3-8 NEC) took control of the game with a four minute, 13-0 run that set the Blackbirds back, 19-8.
After facing a 29-19 halftime deficit and continuing to trail throughout the third quarter, LIU clawed its way back into the contest as time grew scarce. The Blackbirds went on a 13-6 run and cut the Seahawks' edge to its closest of the second half, 49-44, with under a minute to go. LIU attempted to extend the game but Wagner hit three free throws down the stretch and forced two Blackbird turnovers late.
OTHER NOTES
- Winter's 10-point effort was the first for her since she scored 12 against Lehigh on December 10 at the Barclays Center.
- For the third time this season, Waithe swatted away a career-best four shots, matching her showings against Mount St. Mary's (January 15) and (January 27) at home last month.
NEXT UP
LIU will play the first of its two home games in February on Saturday, February 10 at 2 p.m. against Robert Morris.
