BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn softball team rallied to win an offensive battle on LIU Field Wednesday evening, beating Rutgers, 11-10 in nine innings. The two teams had a combined 33 hits at the plate, including seven home runs. Senior Victoria Zamora had two of those home runs for the Blackbirds, including a three run dinger in the bottom of the eighth that would keep LIU in the game.

NOTES FROM THE NEST
  • The slugfest started on the first pitch of the game, when Rutgers had a lead-off home run. But Zamora would answer for LIU in the bottom of the second inning, hitting a home run of her own on a full count to tie the game up, 1-1.
  • In the top of the third, another lead-off home run on the first pitch put the Knights up by one, but LIU answered in the bottom of the third, with an RBI walk and RBI ground out that put the home team up, 3-2.
  • Senior Angie Vazquez would put LIU up, 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth, when she hit a home run with two runners on base.
  • The Blackbirds added another run to the total in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double from freshman Ryleigh Bermea.
  • Freshman Victoria Lowe had the start for LIU on the mound, and held Rutgers scoreless for four straight innings.
  • The Scarlet Knights would close the gap to just one run in the top of the seventh inning, on a grand slam over the left field fence. Then with two outs, an RBI single tied the game up, 7-7.
  • Rutgers used an RBI double and a two-run homer in the top of the eighth to go up, 10-7.
  • Zamora would keep the Blackbirds in the game with her home run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Singles from Kiana Cisneros and Patricia Griffin put two runners on with no outs, when Zamora blasted the ball over the left field fence, clearing the bases and knotting it up, 10-10.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, the Blackbirds gutted out the winning run. Alina Castillo, Katie Hinkle and Cisneros had back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases with no outs, and Griffin came to the plate. The junior hit the ball hard to second base, and the Knights tried to make the play at the plate, but Castillo's slide beat the throw, and LIU had the walk off win, 11-10.

STATISTICAL STANDOUTS
  • Junior Haley Irvis (6-8) had the win on the mound for LIU, while Lowe pitched 6.1 innings in the no decision. Senior Erynn Sobieski pitched 1.2 innings of relief.
