FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse team rallied to score seven goals in the second half, but couldn't keep up with the Pioneers Friday evening, dropping their Northeast Conference opener to Sacred Heart, 16-10. Senior Sierra O'Connor and freshman Amanda Masullo led LIU with two goals apiece.

The home team would jump out to an early lead on the Blackbirds, scoring a goal just 16 seconds into the game, and adding three more goals over the next four minutes to go up, 4-0. LIU would get on the board nine minutes later, when freshman Rachel Masullo scored off a pass from junior Dale Cosgrave. Less than a minute later, Amanda Masullo scored her first goal of the game, again off a pass from Cosgrave, cutting the gap to 4-2. But Sacred Heart Would score five goals over the next five minutes to widen the lead to 8-2. Carlie Robinson would score a goal with just 30 seconds left in the half to help stop the spree, but the pioneers added one as the half ended, taking a 9-3 lead in to the break.

In the second half, however, LIU would match SHU goal for goal. Cosgrave scored the first goal of the half on her own, and a minute later, Amanda Masullo scored again to make it 10-5. The Pioneers would add three straight goals to take a 13-5 lead, but LIU answered with a spree of its own. After freshman Elise Person scored a goal, Sierra O'Connor and Bianca Santucci would rally to score three straight goals and cut the lead to five goals, 14-9. Junior Candice Mosal would add one with just over five minutes left to play, but Sacred Heart added two more before the game was over, taking the win, 16-10.

Up next, the Blackbirds return home to Brooklyn to host four straight Northeast Conference contests on LIU Field, starting with Central Connecticut State, Friday, April 13 at 4 p.m.
