LORETTO, Pa. – The LIU Brooklyn softball team saw their championship run come to an end Saturday afternoon in Loretto, Pa., as the Blackbirds fell to the host Red Flash in five innings, 11-1.
SFU hit four home runs against the Blackbirds in the win, as the Red Flash won their second-straight Northeast Conference Championship title. The home team would take a 3-0 lead early in the first inning, and built from there. SFU's Adrian Smith had the win on the mound with just 55 pitches, holding LIU to just four hits in the contest while striking out three.
The Blackbirds scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth frame. Freshman
Ryleigh Bermea had a one-out single, and advanced on a wild pitch. A single from classmate
Kiana Cisneros put her on third, and Bermea came home on the next play, scoring on a fielder's choice. But it wasn't enough to make a dent in the lead, and the game ended after the fifth frame, with Saint Francis taking the 11-1 win.
With the loss, LIU finishes the season with a 22-29 overall record.
