BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The LIU Brooklyn women's soccer team and New Jersey Institute of Technology played to a scoreless draw on Sunday in Hillside, New Jersey. The 0-0 game was the marks the second consecutive year the Blackbirds (0-1-1) tied their second contest after losing the season opener.

For LIU, sophomore goalkeeper Megan Virgin notched her first career shutout, playing all 110 minutes and collecting seven saves, as the Blackbirds put forth a stellar defensive effort in the tie. After two games so far this season, the LIU defense has yielded only one goal for the first time since the 2013 campaign.

During regulation, the Highlanders had better chances, outshooting the Blackbirds, 14-3, but also were unable to capitalize. Then in the twenty minutes of overtime, NJIT added seven more shots, including two on goal, taking 21 shots overall.

Just eleven minutes into the game, the Blackbirds had their best chance in regulation on a Kimberly Butland shot, but it was denied by NJIT goalkeeper Amelia Sapirman (one save), who earned her first shutout of the season. Besides Butland, senior Marian Awad and freshman Emily Poole each had a shot in the game.

BLACKBIRDS BACK HOME
The Blackbirds will be back home on Thursday night for another non-conference battle against a local rival from New Jersey, as St. Peter's comes to LIU Field for a 6:00 p.m. start.
