HAMILTON, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn field hockey team dropped the 2018 season opener to Saint Louis University 2-0 on Friday afternoon. The Bilikens used two second half scores to take the neutral site matchup against the Blackbirds at Tyler's Field.
LIU controlled the pace in the first half outshooting Saint Louis 7-5 through the opening 35 minutes. The Blackbirds recorded five penalty corners late in the period,after three shots were blocked by the Billikens redshirt-sophomore 
Casey Carrigan was able to find an opening but her shot was denied by goalkeeper Sasha Sander in the 31
st minute. Sophomore 
Jenna Chrabolowski fired one more shot on goal in the 33rd minute as LIU recorded six shots in the final 10 minutes of the half.
Momentum stayed LIU's way out of halftime as freshman 
Eva van Wakeren fired two shots on goal in the opening two minutes. The Billikens broke the scoreless game open at the 49:47 mark on a goal by Mimi Leonard. Saint Louis continued to hold possession of the ball before doubling its lead in the 61
st minute. Junior 
Molly Jannell turned away two more shots late to hold the score, finishing with a game-high seven saves in the start.
van Wakeren led the Blackbirds with five shots in the game, the rookie and Chrabolowski tallied two shots on goal to lead the team. Saint Louis held the shot advantage in the second half, eventually outshooting LIU 14-12 in the game.
