BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The LIU Brooklyn women's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against Mount St. Mary's in the team's Northeast Conference home opener on Friday. Senior forward
Marian Awad tied the game late in the second half on a penalty kick to secure the Blackbirds' first points in NEC play this season.
In the 88th minute, Awad sent a ball into the middle, which led to a handball by a Mount defender. She then took the penalty kick and put it in the lower left corner for her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Sophomore Megan Virgin, made her second straight start in goal, and made six saves on 15 total shots in 110 minutes of action.
After a scoreless first half, Mount took advantage of a corner kick played to the middle when Jaylyn Chandler picked up the loose ball and scored from five yards out. Maggie Barron made two saves in goal for Mount (1-6-3, 0-0-2), who picked up their second tie in as many NEC contests this year.
The Blackbirds' Brittany Fazin took two shots in the match (one on goal), while freshmen Sarah Borer, Mia Rose Daly and Emily Poole each took a shot in the game.
With the tie, LIU moves to 2-7-3 overall and 0-1-1 in the NEC as they pivot quickly to Sunday, when they will host Sacred Heart (1-10, 0-2) on Senior Day at LIU Field. Kickoff time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
