SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team fell to San Diego State on the road Friday evening, 2-1. The Blackbirds played nearly 13 minutes of the second half down a man due to a red card, and didn't let the Aztecs get a good shot off in that time. Complete stats from the game will be posted when they become available.
The first half did not see much offensive action. San Diego State would struggle with LIU's defense, getting called offside multiple times. The home team would register the first shot of the day in the 41
st minute, but it went wide. And then the two teams would score back to back goals within 30 seconds of each other.
In the 44
th minute, an Aztec player was whistled for a yellow card in the box, and the Blackbirds had their first penalty kick of the season. Senior
Rasmus Hansen took the shot and scored, putting LIU on top, 1-0. But the lead would only last 30 seconds. Coming out of the stoppage, SDSU put the pressure on, scoring a quick goal to even it up, 1-1, with under 30 seconds left to play in the half.
In the second half, the two teams would make more of an offensive effort, getting shots off, as both keepers made saves to keep it tied. SDSU increased the pressure in the 65
th minute of the game and beyond, when LIU goalie
Anthony Sciola was forced to make back to back saves in net. But the home team would get the game winner in not long after that, scoring in the 69
th minute. The Aztecs would arc a ball into the upper left corner from 20 yards out, giving them a 2-1 lead.
Ten minutes later, a red card for the Blackbirds forced them to play a man down for the rest of the game, and San Diego State (1-2-1) clinched the win over LIU (1-3-1).
Up next, the Blackbirds head south to take on Loyola Marymount Sunday, as a part of the 11th annual Courtyard Marriott San Diego Central Aztec Soccer Tournament.
