BETHPAGE, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team beat Hofstra on the road Sunday morning, downing the Pride, 5-2. Though the Blackbirds lost the doubles point, they rallied to win five of the six singles matches and take the win.
 
Senior Anna Grigoryan and junior Ana Leonte had LIU's lone win in doubles, beating their opponents at No. 1, 6-4. Hofstra would take wins in the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles spots, 6-3 and 7-6 to take the early doubles point.
 
In singles, Grigoryan had the first win for LIU, beating Jasmine King at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-1 to even the match score, 1-1. Then, Leonte notched the next win for the Blackbirds, beating her opponent in the No. 6 singles spot, 6-1, 6-3. Senior Malin Leysen made it 3-1 for LIU when she beat Sarah Herndon in straight sets in the No.4 spot, 6-2, 6-2.
 
Hofstra would get a point on the board again when Alejandra Ruffini beat Jessica Brzozowska in a three-set battle, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, but junior Sasha Bollweg would clinch the team win for LIU when she rallied from a first set loss to beat Katherine Kachkarov in the No.3 singles spot, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Senior Clemence Krug gave LIU the fifth and final point, beating her opponent in a three set war at No.5, 5-7, 7-5, 7-6.
 
Up next, the Blackbirds head north for a weekend swing through New England, taking on Brown, Bryant and UMass from February 22-24.
