LORETTO, Pa.— The LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team earned its second straight win, storming past Saint Francis U 75-69 on Saturday afternoon. The Blackbirds shot 52% from three-point range at DeGol Arena with a season-high 13 made three-point field goals.

LIU finished with five scorers in double figures in the road victory. Sophomore Jeydah Johnson registered a game-high 23 points on the day including seven made three-pointers. Sophomore Tia Montagne tallied a career-high 19 points for the Blackbirds. Freshman Brandy Thomas added 10 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds and five assists. First-year guards Tiya Misir and Ryan Weise also tallied 10 points for LIU.

Saint Francis held the early lead in the opening minutes on its senior day. LIU grabbed the lead at 7-6 on a corner three from Misir at 5:59 remaining in the period. The Red Flash offense started to click shortly after with a 17-6 closing stretch to the opening period to take a 23-13 lead.

With the home team holding the 10-point favor early in the second quarter, The Blackbirds got some momentum going on a spot up three pointer from freshman Ryan Weise at 7:08 in the quarter. This opened up a 14-2 run for the Blackbirds as a three from Misir knotted the game up at 30-30 with 3:48 to go in the quarter. Saint Francis made the final run of the quarter with a 7-1 closing stretch to take a 37-31 lead into the half.

The Red Flash continued to hold on to the slight lead as LIU started to find rhythm on the offensive end halfway through the third period. A spot up jumper from Montagne at made it a two-point game with 5:07 to go before a three from Johnson gave the Blackbirds a 45-44 lead with 4:19 to play. The Blackbirds cruised from there going perfect on their four field goals the rest of the quarter in part of a 17-5 closing run to take the 57-49 lead. LIU shot a sensational 71.4% (10-14) clip from the field in the third quarter.

LIU remained in control as the final period went on, taking a 10-point lead on three-pointer from Johnson to make it 67-57 with 5:54 to go in the period. Saint Francis attempted to come back in the final period getting to within six points with 48 seconds remaining at 72-66. The Blackbirds defense held the Red Flash to just one more field goal the rest of the way while cashing in at the free throw line to seal the win.

NOTES FROM THE NEST
  • The win snapped a eight game losing skid for LIU against the Red Flash. LIU registered its first win since February 7, 2015 against SFU.
  • LIU posted its third straight game with 10 or more made three-point field goals. LIU has shot over 50% from downtown the last two games.
  • The Blackbirds dished out 17 assists for the second straight game. Thomas led the way with a career-high five assists.
  • Johnson recorded her sixth 20-point effort of the season for LIU. Her seven made three-point field goals were also a season-high.
  • Montagne recorded a career-best 19 points on a career-high six made field goals.
  • Thomas recorded her seventh straight game in double figures and Weise tallied her sixth straight game in double digits.
