MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa.— The LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team fell to league-leading Robert Morris 71-54 at the North Athletic Complex.
Sophomore
Jeydah Johnson paced the LIU offense for the third straight game, finishing with 17 points on the night. Freshman
Brandy Thomas recorded her 12
th double-double of the season with 15 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. Sophomore Tia Montage added 11 points and freshman
Tiya Misir dished out a career-high six assists for LIU.
The opening quarter went to the home team as LIU was held to two points from a layup by Montagne as the game went into the first media timeout for a 11-2 RMU lead. The Blackbirds would find footing on the offensive end as Thomas and Johnson closed the quarter with five points for a 15-7 Colonials lead at the quarter break.
Both teams traded baskets to start the second quarter before LIU made its largest run of the game. A three-pointer from Montagne at 7:53 kicked off a 10-0 run for the Blackbirds with an old fashioned three-point play from Thomas capping the stretch to LIU the lead 20-19 with 6:24 left in the quarter. RMU responded with a 12-5 closing stretch to take a 31-25 lead into the half.
Momentum continued to swing in RMU's favor with a 14-5 into the under-five media timeout solidified the lead at 45-30. The Colonials continued to click on the offensive end shooting a 64.3% clip from the floor in the third for a 54-34 advantage into the final period.
The Blackbirds opened the fourth quarter strong, going five-of-seven from the floor to start the period. LIU then went on a 7-3 stretch capped by five straight points from Johnson to cut the game to 66-52 with 3:12 to go. Both teams would go quiet on the offensive end to close out the game as Robert Morris came away with the 71-54 win.
NOTES FROM THE NEST
- Johnson recorded nine of her team-high 17 points in the fourth quarter. She has led the team in scoring in 14 games this season.
- Thomas recorded her fifth double-double in NEC play and 12th overall for the year. She grabbed seven of her 17 rebounds on the offensive glass, finishing two shy of her career-high.
- Misir dished out a career-high six assists and without a turnover against the Colonials on Monday night.
- The Colonials held the edge on the glass, outrebounding LIU38-33 on the night.
