BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn men's basketball team snapped a two-game losing skid in its tracks Thursday night, beating Northeast Conference opponent Mount St. Mary's in resounding fashion in Barclays Center, 77-62. The Blackbirds, who led wire-to-wire in the contest, notched their first win at the arena since December of 2016. LIU had four players score in double digits, led by sophomore
Ty Flowers, who had 18 points.
Senior
Raiquan Clark had his sixth double-double of the season, with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while junior
Jashaun Agosto had 14 points and nine assists, and senior
Raul Frias added 11 points. With the win, LIU improves to 11-12 on the season, and 5-6 in NEC play.
The Blackbird started to roll right from the start of the game, outscoring the Mount 10-0 in the first four minutes, including two straight three pointers by Flowers and Agosto. The Mountaineers would get on the board eventually, and over the next four minutes, closed LIU's lead to just two points, 16-14 at the 11-minute mark. But senior
Raul Frias would hit a layup, and just over a minute later, Flowers would convert a traditional three-point play to widen the Blackbird lead back up to 21-16. From there, the two teams battled back and forth for the rest of the half, with LIU managing to hold on to a small lead, 36-33 at the break.
At the start of the second half, Mount would continue to keep it close, using a jumper at 14:54 to keep the lead within three points, 43-40. But the Blackbirds would answer with a 9-0 run that helped put the game out of reach for good. Flowers started it with a layup, but then junior
Julian Batts hit back-to-back three pointers, that helped give LIU a 52-40 lead. From there, the Mountaineers never got closer than seven points, as the Blackbirds were able to successfully shut down any run. Flowers would got 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the final minute, and van Sauers would hit a three with just 30 seconds left, to help seal the win for the Blackbirds, 77-62.
