Women's Basketball Hosts Wagner For Play 4 Kay & Alumni Day

BROOKLYN, N.Y.—The LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team welcomes Wagner to the Steinberg Center on Saturday afternoon to close out the home-and-home series. 

LIU will be hosting its' annual Play 4 Kay Game, to raise money for breast cancer research and awareness. The Blackbirds will be wearing pink to show support, as well as selling pink t-shirts to raise money for the Kay Yow Foundation. The Blackbirds will also be hosting Alumni Day, welcoming past players back to the Steinberg Center.

NOTES FROM THE NEST

  • In the first game of the home-and-home series against the Seahawks, LIU fell 72-62 at the Spiro Sports Center. The Blackbirds battled with a strong second quarter to cut the deficit to two at the half but Wagner controlled the battle on the glass in the second half to take the victory. 
  • First-year forward Brandy Thomas led the Blackbirds with 20 points and eight rebounds on the day. She tallied 18 points for LIU in the second half of play. Freshman Ryan Weise contributed a career-high 15 points and sophomore Tia Montagne added 10 points. 
  • Wagner enters the halfway point in league play with a 5-13 record overall and 3-5 mark in conference play. The Seahawks rank second in the NEC in field goal percentage (41.2%) and assists per game with 13.5. On the defensive end, Wagner ranks second in turnovers forced with a 17.11 per game average. 
  • Taylah Simmons paces the Wagner offense with a 14.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. She led the Seahawks with 27 points and 15 rebounds on Saturday. Alayshia Dailey and Nakylia Carter also finished in double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively last weekend.
  • With the Wagner win last Saturday the all-time series is now locked up at 44-44. The Blackbirds earned a 74-69 win last season at the Steinberg Center behind three scorers in double figures including 17 points from Jeydah Johnson back on January 13, 2018.

The Blackbirds close out the season series against Mount St. Mary's on Monday, February 11 with a 7:00 p.m. tip-off from the Steinberg Center.
