SAN DIEGO, Calif. – A late comeback attempt for the LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse team fell short Saturday afternoon, as the Blackbirds scored three goals in the final five minutes, but fell to San Diego State, 18-15. Six different Blackbirds (1-7) scored in the loss for LIU, led by sophomore Amanda Masullo's four goals.

SDSU would score first in the game, just 30 seconds in, but Masullo would even the score up less than five minutes later, scoring her first goal to make it 1-1. Three minutes later, junior Bianca Santucci gave LIU its first lead of the game, scoring an unassisted goal to make it 2-1. San Diego State and LIU would trade goals back and forth from there, using scores from Santucci, Rachel Masullo and freshman Isabelle Peng to answer the Aztecs, and give LIU a 5-4 lead with 14 minutes left in the first half.

But a minute later, San Diego State would tie it up with a goal at 5-5, but this time, LIU wasn't able to answer. The Aztecs would score five unanswered goals, taking a 10-5 lead over the Blackbirds. Towards the end of the half, Elise Person and Rachel Masullo would score twice more, cutting San Diego State's lead to 11-7 at the half.

In the second half, Bridget Neiley and Rachel Masullo would both score to keep LIU within four, 13-9, and Santucci added a goal off a pass from Person to make it 14-10. But three unanswered goals by SDSU widened the gap to 17-10 with just over 10 minutes left to play.

But the Blackbirds would keep battling back. Person and Amanda Masullo scored back to back goals to make it 17-12, and the duo would combine to score LIU's last three goals, sparking the Blackbirds' comeback attempt. Masullo scored two goals within 30 seconds to cut the lead to 18-14 with just over four minutes to play, but LIU wouldn't score again until the final minute, when an unassisted goal by Perosn made it 18-15.

Despite the late comeback attempt, the Blackbirds fell short, and San Diego State took the win, 18-15. Sophomore Sam Kidd had 21 saves for LIU in the loss.

Up next, the Blackbirds return home to LIU Field to host Presbyterian, Friday, March 22 at 4 p.m.
