BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse had a big win on LIU Field Sunday afternoon, rallying to beat Sacred Heart in overtime, 16-15. It was just the second time in school history that the Blackbirds have beaten the Pioneers. With the win, LIU moves to 5-8 on the season, and 2-1 in Northeast Conference action.

The game was also Senior Day for the Blackbirds, as the team honored Virginia Gibbons, Carlie Robinson, Maddie Shockley and Josie Watson prior to the game.

The game was a close one for a majority of the contest. LIU would get on the board first when sophomore Amanda Masullo scored an unassisted goal two minutes in, but SHU's Lydia Werlau would answer 20 seconds later to tie it up, 1-1. Werlau would score nine of SHU's 15 goals on the day.

Werlau added another one just under a minute later, but similarly, Rachel Masullo would score 48 seconds later to tie it back up, 2-2.

The first half stayed close, but both Masullos, along with freshman Kaylee Riggins, would score goals to keep LIU ahead, giving the Blackbirds an 8-6 advantage at the halftime break.

In the second half, goals from the Masullos and Riggins, along with one from junior Bianca Santucci put LIU up by its widest margin of the day, 13-8. But Sacred Heart would come storming back. Though goals from Santucci and Elise Person would keep the lead at four goals, at 14-10 and 15-11, in the final five minutes of the game, the Pioneers would rally to score four unanswered goals and tie it up, 15-15. The tying goal came with just 22 seconds left to play, forcing the game into overtime.

In the OT period, Rachel Masullo won a huge draw control for the Blackbirds, giving them the early advantage. From there, as the shot clock wound down, sophomore Elise Person would fire off a shot that got past the SHU goalie, and end the game, giving the Blackbirds the 16-15 golden goal win.

Rachel Masullo led the Blackbirds in the win, with five goals and three assists, along with nine draw controls. Sophomore Amanda Masullo added five goals and one assist, while Bianca Santucci, Elise Person and Kaylee Riggins all had two goals apiece. Riggins also had eight draw controls and two ground balls for the Blackbirds. In the net, senior Virginia Gibbons and sophomore Sam Kidd each had five saves in net, with Gibbons getting the win on Senior Day.

Up next, the Blackbirds host the final two home games of the year, welcoming Saint Francis U. on Thursday, April 18 at 4 p.m., and hosting Robert Morris, Saturday, April 20 at 11 a.m.
