DANBURY, Conn.— Brandy Thomas of the LIU Brooklyn women's basketball team was named Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's Basketball Rookie of The Year on Wednesday afternoon. Thomas adds to her stellar rookie campaign after earning NEC Rookie of The Year, All-NEC Third Team and All-Rookie honors last month.
The Baldwin, N.Y. native became the program's fourth NEC Rookie of The Year after leading the team and NEC rookies in scoring with 13.9 points per game. A six-time NEC Rookie of the Week this season, Thomas was the lone NEC rookie to finish top-10 in both scoring and rebounding.
Her team leading scoring output ranked eighth among league leaders. Thomas ranked second in the conference with 10.4 rebounds per game this season, that mark led all first year players this season. The 5-10 forward recorded 15 double-doubles on the season, ranking second in the conference. Her season total in double-doubles was the most in the nation by a freshman.
In her rookie campaign she became the first LIU rookie to lead the team in scoring since Ashley Palmer in 2008-2009. She is also the first Blackbird to average a double-double on the season since Cammie Williams back in 1992-1993.
Thomas becomes the first Blackbird to capture the ECAC Rookie of the Year Award. She is also the third NEC student-athlete to earn NEC & ECAC Rookie of the Year honors in the last four seasons joining Saint Francis U's Caitlyn Kroll (2017-18) and Jess Kovatch (2015-16). She joins Tiana Mangakahia of Syracuse (ECAC Player of the Year) and Towson coach Diane Richardson (ECAC Coach of The Year) as the major award winners this season.
