Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Mount in Season Finale, 16-10

EMMITSBURG, Md. – The LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse team finished out the 2019 regular season with a 16-10 loss to Mount St. Mary's on the road Sunday. With the loss, the Blackbirds are officially eliminated from playoff contention, and finish the year with a 6-11 overall record and 3-4 in the Northeast Conference. LIU ends the year in fifth place in the league standings, just one game out of the four-team NEC Tournament. Mount finished the season with a perfect 7-0 record in NEC action, and clinch the regular season championship, and will host the NEC Tournament next weekend.

With playoff hopes on the line, the Blackbirds would go goal-for-goal with the Mountaineers early on. After Mount scored two minutes into the game, LIU answered on the next possession. Sophomore Amanda Masullo won the draw, and 45 seconds later, sophomore Elise Person found the back of the net to tie it up, 1-1. Mount would score quickly again, taking a 2-1 lead, but junior Bianca Santucci evened the score eight minutes later, to make it 2-2.

Mount would score the next four goals without an LIU answer, but Santucci helped closed the lead as the clock wound down. The junior attacker scored as the clock wound down, cutting the gap for the Blackbirds down to 6-3 at the halftime break.

Mount began to pull away in the second half, scoring two early goals. Freshman Isabelle Peng helped stop the scoring spree with her goal six minutes into the half, which made it 8-4. The home team would score back-to-back goals in just 15 seconds to widen the lead to 10-4. Amanda Masullo would score next for LIU, off a pass from her sister Rachel Masullo, to make it 10-5. But the Mount answered with four straight goals, eventually widening their lead to 14-5.

But the Blackbirds wouldn't back down. Amanda Masullo scored with 18 minutes left, and Person scored a minute and a half later on a free position shot. Rachel Masullo then added another goal a minute later, cutting the lead back down 14-8. Amanda Masullo added a goal with 6:26 to play, and Santucci completed the hat trick with her goal with 25 seconds left to play in the game, as the Blackbirds fell in the end, 16-10.

Senior goalie Virginia Gibbons went out on a high note for LIU, as she tied her career high with 14 saves in the last game of the season. Sophomore Amanda Masullo led LIU with three goals and two assists, along with four ground balls. Junior Bianca Santucci had three goals for the Blackbirds, while Elise Person had two goals and two ground balls. Rachel Masullo finished with a goal and an assist, while freshman Isabelle Peng had a goal and three draw controls.
