Andy Russo begins his seventh season as a full-time member of the LIU Brooklyn softball program in 2018-19.
Russo, who was a volunteer assistant for the Blackbirds in 2008, serves as the primary hitting coach and assists in recruiting, scouting opponents, reviewing game and practice film, monitoring the players' academic performance as well as working with LIU Brooklyn's athletic business department.
Prior to his time at LIU, Russo spent the last four seasons as an assistant coach at St. John's, serving as the Red Storm's hitting coach while also working with infielders.
In 2012, Russo helped St. John's to its first BIG EAST Tournament win since 1990, a 2-1 victory over eventual NCAA Regional finalist Syracuse. He mentored BIG EAST Player of the Year Kacee Cox, who led the conference in batting average (.484), slugging percentage (.968), on-base percentage (.558), hits (30), home runs (8) and total bases (60) in league games, and BIG EAST second-team member Kristi Cady.
Russo helped the St. John's offense make major strides in 2010. Under his direction, Cox saw her batting average jump from .255 in 2009 to .404 in 2010. Cady (.197 BA in 2009, .300 BA in 2010) and Julia Sanchez (.187 BA in 2009, .280 BA in 2010) also improved at the plate tremendously.
Russo currently resides in Manalapan, N.J., with his wife Andrea, daughter Sam and son Joe.
