Alex Trezza begins his second season as head baseball coach at LIU Brooklyn in 2015-16. The Brooklyn native, a former All-American at Stony Brook, served as an assistant coach at Sacred Heart prior to making his way to downtown Brooklyn.
Trezza spent the 2014 season at Sacred Heart University as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator where he helped the Pioneers reach the championship game of the Northeast Conference Tournament. It was the sixth consecutive season that the program had advanced to that point. A pair of Sacred Heart freshmen - Keith Klebart and Zach Short - were named Louisville Slugger Freshman All-Americans while senior Kody Kerski was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the eighth round of the Major League Baseball Draft.
Prior to his stint at SHU, Trezza was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for two seasons at the University of New Haven. In 2013, Trezza helped lead New Haven to a 34-16 record and its first-ever Northeast-10 Championship. The Chargers went on to earn the No. 3 seed at the NCAA East Region Championship. New Haven recorded its first NCAA postseason win since 2003 with a 3-1 victory over eventual region champion Franklin Pierce. In 2012, Trezza's first year at UNH, the Chargers finished with a 25-19-1 record and secured a spot in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. In his time at UNH, he coached one All-American, six All-Region and eight Northeast-10 All-Conference players. In addition, he helped mentor three eventual professional players, including Henry Hirsch (22nd round -Pittsburgh Pirates), Chris Demorais (38th round - Tampa Bay), and Ryan Brockett, who plays for the CamAm League’s Worcester Tornadoes.
During the 2010-2011 season Trezza served as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator at Adelphi University. There, Trezza helped lead the Panthers to a 36-win season, and a Northeast-10 Conference Championship, as well as a No.1 seed in the NCAA Northeast Regional Tournament. Under Trezza’s tutelage, the team had seven All NE-10 Conference honorees, and Omar Velasquez was named the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament MVP. During his stint at Adelphi ,Trezza helped mentor five future professional players, including Rob Nixon, who was drafed in the 46
th round by the Cleveland Indians.
Trezza started his collegiate coaching career at Anna Maria College in 2009, where he served as the top assistant and helped guide the squad to a record 21 wins, and postseason berths in both the TCCC Conference and ECAC Championships..
Along with six years of coaching experience, Trezza brings an extensive playing background to the LIU program. He was a three-year member of Stony Brook's baseball team, earning Freshman of The Year and New York State Baseball Conference Player of the Year honors in his first season in 1999 after hitting 17 home runs and driving in 55 RBIs as a shortstop.
As a sophomore, he hit 15 more home runs and followed that up with a school-record 23 en route to being named the program's first All-American in 2001.
Trezza holds several school records at Stony Brook, including single-season home runs (23), career home runs (55) and career RBIs (176). The Middletown, N.Y. native was drafted in the 18th round by the Detroit Tigers following his junior year and played four seasons in the Detroit organization. He received the Most Improved Player award in 2003 after stroking 19 doubles and driving in 27 runs for High A Lakeland.
Following his stint with the Tigers, Trezza signed as a free agent with the Rockies and participated in their spring training. He also spent time with the Worcester Tornadoes and the North Shore Spirit of the Can-Am League, where he led the league in home runs with 19 during the 2006 season.
Trezza graduated from Stony Brook with a bachelor's degree in political science in 2004.
