One of the top players in recent LIU Brooklyn history, former Blackbird John Ziznewski rejoined the program as an assistant coach in 2016-17. Ziznewski focuses on hitting and assists Pirillo in all phases of the program.

The 2014 Northeast Conference Player of the Year, Ziznewski tore through the NEC with a vengeance as a senior, leading the league in five offensive categories – hits (72), home runs (9), runs batted in (55), slugging percentage (.589) and total bases (116). He was second in stolen bases (18), on-base percentage (.431) and runs scored (50), while ranking third with a .365 batting average.

Following a successful two-year stint with the Blackbirds that also featured American Baseball Coaches Association All-America honors, Ziznewski was drafted in the eighth round of the 2014 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Chicago White Sox. As a pro, he finished the 2015 season with Kannapolis of the Class A South Atlantic League with a .273 batting average.
