Margaret Alaimo is in the 15th year of her second tour of duty at LIU Brooklyn in 2018-19, and is in her 29th year overall as a member of the LIU community. Alaimo serves as the Deputy Director of Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator at the downtown Brooklyn school.
She works with the Director of Athletics, handling the day-to-day operations of the athletic department. In addition, Alaimo oversees the department's scholarship budget, team transportation needs and student-athlete welfare.
The Brooklyn native serves as a liaison between the athletic department and student financial services, residence life and housing, and has served as tournament director for various Northeast Conference championships hosted by LIU Brooklyn. An active member within the NEC community, she currently serves on committees for financial aid standards and sports management, as well as volleyball and women's lacrosse sport committees.
Under her direction over the past 29 years, LIU has seen a renaissance in both athletics and academics. The Blackbirds have won over 60 NEC team championships in her tenure, and seen a steady increase in academics as well. In the fall of 2018, the LIU Brooklyn athletic department posted its highest departmental GPA ever, 3.427, marking the fourth straight semester of increasing that mark.
Alaimo has overseen some of the most dominant programs in the Northeast Conference, including LIU softball’s 14 NEC championship titles (a conference record), men’s basketball’s three-straight NEC championships and NCAA tournament appearances from 2011-13, women’s volleyball’s 11 championship titles over 15 years (also a conference record), women’s golf’s NEC three-peat (2012-14) and LIU track & field’s dominance on both the men’s and the women’s side, including the men’s team winning five indoor championship titles in six years.
She has cultivated a department that has seen Olympians, All-Americans, professional athletes in nearly every program offered, numerous NEC individual champions, and dozens of major NEC award winners, including over 30 Coach of the Year honorees at both the conference and regional levels.
Alaimo, a Brooklyn native, returned to LIU after serving as interim associate athletic director at Fairleigh Dickinson University for two years. Her responsibilities included assisting NCAA compliance and eligibility matters as well as providing the staff with guidance and leadership. She has served on various Northeast Conference and ECAC committees during her career, including a stint as the chair of the NEC senior woman administrator committee.
Prior to her stint at Fairleigh Dickinson, Alaimo was with LIU Brooklyn from 1987-2001. Alaimo served the last four years of that time as Senior Associate Director of Athletics. She also was the department’s NCAA compliance coordinator during those four years, overseeing the administration and certification of the department’s teams. Prior to serving as Deputy Director and Senior Associate Athletic Director, Alaimo was an Assistant Athletic Director from 1987-90 and an Associate AD/Compliance Coordinator from 1992-97.
From 1987-90, Alaimo was the head women's basketball coach at LIU Brooklyn and undertook the role as head coach of the women's tennis team from 1988-93. Beginning in 1990, Alaimo assisted with the LIU softball team until 1993.
Alaimo came to LIU after serving one season as an assistant women's basketball coach at her alma mater, St. Francis (N.Y.). A former standout on the basketball court, Alaimo scored over 1,400 points combined between St. Francis (N.Y.) and the College of New Rochelle. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in business management in Dec. 1996.
Alaimo is a member of the Brooklyn-Queens Catholic High School Association and St. Francis College Athletics Halls of Fame. Margaret and husband Steve have three children: Elizabeth, Clare and Danny, and reside in West Nyack, N.Y.
