Savannah, Ga. – On the strength of three top-five performances, the Long Island University women's golf team snagged second place at the 2010 Lonnie Barton Invitational in Savannah, Ga. The Blackbird improved upon their 345 in the first round by adding a 339 on the second day. The LIU men's team finished fifth overall while shaving strokes in the final round.
Long Island tied Fairfield with a two-day score of 684 but lost on a fifth-score tiebreaker. On the second day, the Blackbirds were led by sophomore
Anna Palsson who carded an 81 for a two-day total of 167 and third place. Junior
Andrea Staudacher followed Palsson with a fourth-place showing. The Germany native led after the first round with a 79 but couldn't hold on with an 89 on day two.
After struggling in round one, senior
Natalie Desjardins fired a team-low 79 in the final round to grab a fifth place showing. Freshman Linnea Jonsson carded a 90 for the second consecutive day for a tie for 12th.
The men's team remained in fifth for the tournament with a total of 660. Freshman
Josh Waters leaped into a tie for 12th overall following his first-round 82 with a 77 on the second day. Senior
Owen Rigg finished the tournament in a tie for 21st after shooting a 79 on day two. Junior
Rocky Co fired two rounds of 82 to tie for 26th. The first round saw scores of 82 and 85 for sophomore #Seguen Choi and freshman Ryan Lee, respectively.
Longwood won the men's tournament with a team score of 621 through both days and Laval University was second with 630.
The Blackbirds will travel on Spring Break to play a dual match with Fairfield on March 13 in Southport, N.C.
