BROOKLYN, N.Y. --T he LIU Brooklyn athletic department had a record-breaking year in the classroom, finishing second in the league's academic standings, it was announced by the Northeast Conference Wednesday afternoon. Both LIU and institutional award winner Robert Morris broke the NEC's previous GPA record of 3.423 established by Saint Francis U in 2017-18. LIU finished second to Robert Morris by less than one-hundredth of a point, as the Colonials finished the year with a 3.432 GPA.
The NEC also recognized those teams that compiled the highest GPAs in their respective sports, and LIU had a
league-best six Team GPA awards. Both men's indoor track and women's tennis both won NEC Championships this year along with Team GPA awards. Baseball, bowling, men's basketball and men's outdoor track & field also had the highest GPAs in their sports, while both baseball and men's outdoor track & field earned the league's sportsmanship awards this spring.



Additionally, the 3.839 grade point average compiled by the LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team was the
second highest in any sport from all NEC schools this past academic year. And every single one of LIU's teams had a 3.0 or higher GPA this year.
Overall, the NEC's 4,500+ student-athletes posted a combined 3.265 GPA for the 2018-19 academic year, the second-best showing in league history. The high-water mark was set in 2017-18 with a 3.281 combined GPA.
