Long Island Track and Field Earns Four Conference Weekly Awards

Brooklyn, N.Y. – After a record breaking weekend at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational, the Long Island University track and field squads continue to succeed, picking up four of six Northeast Conference weekly awards.

Senior Corryl Boyd earns the men's NEC Track Athlete of the Week honor after reducing his already league-leading time in the 400-meter dash to 48.58. The defending NEC 400-meter dash champion was second out of 66 finishers in event at the New Balance Invite. Boyd's performance also puts him well under the qualifying standard for the postseason IC4A meet in Boston, Mass. on March 5-6.

Not only did sophomore Brian Richards set a new school record in the long jump this past weekend, but he is this week's NEC Field Athlete of the Week. Richards' jump of 7.53m bettered the mark of 7.33m set by Boyd in 2008. The Canadian's leap puts him atop the conference leaderboard in the long jump by over a foot.

Junior Jessie Gaines is the NEC's female Track and Field Athlete of the Week this week. Gaines continued to improve her times in both of the 60-meter sprint events, racing to a 7.38 in the 60-meter dash. Gaines shattered Camilla Harris' record from 2003 in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking in at 8.38. In the triple jump, Gaines leapt to a mark of 12.80m, bettering a mark set by Heather Patton in 2009.

The Blackbirds look to defend their team titles on Feb. 12 and 13 at the Northeast Conference Championships in Landover, Md.
