Daytona Beach, Fla. – The LIU Brooklyn women's golf team heads to LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. this weekend for the 2012 Northeast Conference Championship. The three-day, 54 hole event is a chance to repeat for senior Anna Palsson, last year's individual champion.
Palsson, a consistent performer during her senior campaign, fired a season-best 74 at the Sacred Heart Fall Classic and the Columbia Roar-EE Invitational. The Stockholm, Sweden native has finished in the top ten in every event but one this spring.
The LIU rookies have also been an asset to the Blackbirds this season. Freshman Cristina Felip, who joined the Blackbirds in January, burst onto the scene taking the top spot at the Lonnie Barton Invitational. For that performance, she was named the NEC Women's Golfer of the Week.
The next week, classmate Brianna Maynard was also honored by the conference for a standout performance at the Richmond Spider Invitational. Maynard finished 8th in a deep field and was the highest finishing NEC athlete. Her final round score of 76 was her best so far this season.
Freshman Alice Boothroyd has also had a successful freshman campaign, with her highest finish being 8th at the MU Hawk Invitational. At the same event, senior Julia Rappa finished tied for 23rd to help the Blackbirds to their second tournament win of the season. The first came at the LIU-hosted Lonnie Barton Invitational.
“The girls have worked really hard and had a lot of success so far this season but the NEC Championship is really what it comes down to,” head coach Natalie Desjardins said. “If the girls stick to the process, we will be extremely competitive. Building momentum and confidence will be key for us in order to put ourselves in good position in hopes to do something special on the final day.”
