NEC Championship Home
Emmitsburg, Md. – The LIU Brooklyn men's and women's track and field teams head to the campus of Mount St. Mary's this weekend for the Northeast Conference Championship. Both squads have put up some strong performances during the season and look to be threats heading into this weekend's competition.
Last year, the women finished third as a team while the men were fifth. Senior Jessie Gaines picked up her second consecutive Most Valuable Performer Award as well as Most Outstanding Field Performer.
Gaines holds top spots in the conference in three events heading into the NEC Championship in the long jump, triple jump and 100-meter hurdles. Gaines clocked in at 13.87 in the hurdles, while classmates Torrie Saunders (13.89) and Jazmin Waller (13.99) occupy the second and third spots, respectively.
Waller and Saunders also each sit near the top a jumping event, with Waller sitting fourth in the long jump with a leap of 5.66 meters. Saunders is third on the NEC performance list, leaping to a mark of 12.03 meters in the triple jump at the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships. Waller holds the top spot in the 200-meter dash, a performance where she earned NEC Track Athlete of the Week honors.
In the 100-meter dash, the Blackbirds hold five of the top six spots on the NEC performance list. Senior Charlene Fuller, freshman Bryanna Williams, Saunders, freshman Shakia Williams and junior Amber Mitchell will all be in contention to score points in that event this weekend. The LIU women are also first on the NEC performance list in two of the major relays, the 4x100 and the 4x400.
On the men's side, junior Nickolei Mahlung leads a contingent of strong LIU sprinters looking to make an impact this weekend. Mahlung holds the top spot on the NEC performance list in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.54 while classmate Jarenn Stewart is third with a time of 10.72.
The Blackbirds are also well represented in the 200-meter dash, holding spots three through six on the NEC top performance list. Mahlung and Stewart appear as well as junior Jamal Roberts and senior Robert Barnes. Like the women, the men also sit at the top in the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays.
In the jumps, senior Amire Solomon and junior Wilmot Stubblefield have both leapt to marks above 15 meters, while LIU has a good chance to go 1-2-3 in the long jump with junior Brian Richards (7.45m), senior Corryl Boyd (7.38m) and Stewart (7.33m).
