Brooklyn, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn women's golf heads to State College, Pa. May 10-12 to compete in the NCAA East Regional. The Blackbirds earned the right after taking the overall team title at the 2012 Northeast Conference Championship.
The Blackbirds are led by freshman Cristina Felip, who claimed individual gold at the NEC Championship as well as NEC Rookie of the Year honors. Felip shot an impressive two under par on the second day of competition and topped of the event with an even-par 72 on the final day. In only her first semester as a Blackbird, Felip claimed the top spot at the Lonnie Barton Invitational and was named NEC Women's Golfer of the Week as a result.
Senior Anna Palsson, the 2011 NEC Individual Champion, was integral in the LIU win as well. Palsson rallied back from a slow start to shoot a 72 in the final round of the NEC Championship to help secure the win. For her performance, Palsson was named to the NEC Second Team.
Two other freshmen have shown a lot of promise in their rookie seasons, Alice Boothroyd and Brianna Maynard. Boothroyd carded a season-low round of 75 at the MU Hawk Invitational, where she finished tied for eighth. Maynard earned NEC weekly honors earlier in the spring for a standout performance at the Richmond Spider Invitational.
In her first year as head coach, Natalie Desjardins was named NEC Coach of the Year and helped the Blackbirds to a pair of tournament wins at the Lonnie Barton Invitational and the MU Hawk Invitational.
