BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Claire Isicson-Merle, one of the most influential student-athletes in LIU Brooklyn history, passed away this past Saturday at the age of 91.
Isicson-Merle was the first female athlete in the history of LIU Brooklyn and a 2001 inductee into the LIU Brooklyn Athletics Hall of Fame as a member of the school's track and field team. Isicson-Merle was the United States national champion in the 50-meter dash in both 1937 and 1938, and won the 100-meter dash in 1937.
She is survived by her son, Hugh Merle, her daughter in-law Christina Merle and her grandsons, Christopher and Zachary.
