NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - An early goal in the first half and stellar goalkeeping from senior Jessica Sexton down the stretch propelled the LIU Brooklyn women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Central Connecticut on Sunday afternoon. The Blackbirds got on the scoreboard in the eighth minute and Sexton preserved the shutout with a number of key stops late in the second half en route to victory.
After being held off the scoreboard for six straight contests, LIU finally broke through early in the first half as junior Allison King flicked a throw in into the six-yard box towards goal. The ball ricocheted off a CCSU defender and crossed the goal line to give the Blackbirds a 1-0 lead.
From there, the LIU Brooklyn defense took over and held the Blue Devils off for the remainder of the contest. Sexton had a pair of stops in a three-minute span toward the end of the first half then came through with four saves in the second half.
Two of those came in the 78th and 79th minutes, as the Rochester, N.Y. product denied Allison Kelley and Rachel Cerrone consecutively just 21 seconds apart.
Freshman Madison Gomez led the Blackbirds with three shots, while senior Shino Kunisawa and sophomore Lucy Gunton-Jones were each credited with two shots.
LIU Brooklyn (3-9-1, 1-2-0 NEC) will look to keep momentum going as it takes on Wagner in another Northeast Conference road match on Friday, Oct. 18 at 7:00 p.m.
