Box Score
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Freshman Jenn Peters scored her team-leading third goal in the 27th minute and senior Jessica Sexton posted her third shutout of the season to help the LIU Brooklyn women's soccer to an important 1-0 win over Northeast Conference foe Sacred Heart on Sunday.
Sexton tallied seven saves to bring her season total to 84, tying Stephanie Kansky (2006) for the fourth-most saves in a single season in LIU history. The shutout is the 18th of Sexton's career, three shy of Kansky for second place on the career list.
The Blackbirds (4-10-1, 2-3 NEC) had a quality chance in the 20th minute when sophomore Lucy Gunton-Jones took a corner kick from the left side. The ball was driven into the middle of the box and found junior Jen Spicer, who had her header saved by Sydney Judkins.
Another set piece just over six minutes later led to the first and only goal of the match. Gunton-Jones took the restart after a foul from about 35 yards on the left side and served the ball to Peters. The freshman came across the face of the defense and nodded home her third goal of the season to put LIU Brooklyn up 1-0.
The score would remain the same into the second half when Peters nearly found the back of the net for the second time in the 58th minute. The Slate Hill, N.Y. product took a shot from 20 yards that slid just wide of the left post.
From there, the Blackbirds were able to fend off any potential opportunity that Sacred Heart (5-10-0, 2-3 NEC) managed. The backline of juniors Shannon O'Connor and Sydney Ciufo, sophomore Lucy Gunton-Jones and freshman Asha Mohiddin helped Sexton record the clean sheet.
LIU Brooklyn returns home for a key NEC contest against Robert Morris on Friday, Oct. 25. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. following the men's soccer team's match against Bryant.
