DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The LIU women's golf team won its second-straight Northeast Conference championship title Sunday afternoon, at the Legends Course at the LPGA International Club. The Blackbirds led wire-to-wire, finished 12 strokes ahead of the field to earn back-to-back championship trophies, and the third title in program history. Sophomore Alice Boothroyd was the top individual finisher, coming in third overall.
After jumping out to an early lead on day one, the Blackbirds widened the lead each day, and came into Sunday's final round with a 17-stroke cushion. They finished the day with a total of 942 (304-312-326), over Central Connecticut State (954) and Fairleigh Dickinson (958), and had three athletes finish in the top-10.
Boothroyd led the Blackbirds, with a total score of 230 (76-74-80), after carding an 8-over-par 80 Sunday. Sophomore Brianna Maynard finished with the same score, to come in with a three-day total of 235 (75-80-80), good for fifth place individually. And freshman Marisol Doglioli tied for sixth, with her three day total of 236 (78-75-83).
Sophomore Cristina Felip finished with a third round score of 83, putting her three-day total at 241 (75-83-83), tying for 14th. And freshman Victoria Fagan shot an 88 Sunday, to put her at 261 for the weekend (87-86-88), 43rd overall.
With the championship, the Blackbirds earn the NEC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, beginning with the regional competition, May 9-11. The NCAA Selection Show will be hled Monday, April 29 at 9 p.m. Fans can watch live here.
