BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn men's and women's track and field teams will be well represented on the national stage, as a select number of Blackbirds will make their way to the NCAA's Outdoor Track & Field East Regionals hosted by North Carolina A&T, set to start on Wednesday, May 22. The field was announced Thursday, and five LIU student athletes and two relay squads were selected, based on their fastest times this season.
On the women's side, freshman Kyaira Wright-Harmon will compete in the high jump event, which she has been dominating all season. Her record-setting leap of 1.77m, which she recorded at the Northeast Conference Outdoor Championship on May 4, set new NEC Championship and school records.
The men will look to be noticed at the regionals, with Blackbirds' participation in multiple events.
Sophomore Brendon Rodney qualified in the 200m dash, with his time of 20.60 seconds. The time, a new LIU school record, is the seventh fastest time in the East Region.
Recently named Most Valuable Performer at the NEC Championships, senior Brian Richards will look to add another accolade to his four-year career. Representing LIU in the long jump, Richards qualified with his best distance of 7.35m.
And freshman Mica-Jonathan Petit-Homme will compete in the 400 meter hurdles, with his time of 52.43, the fastest in the NEC this year.
Sophomore Kemar Lewis qualified to compete in the high jump at Regionals, clearing a new school record height of 2.09m.
Two relay squads from LIU also made the cut for the Regional event. Having the 15th fastest time in the nation this year (40.10), the 4x100 meter relay team of senior Nickolei Mahlung, Richards, Rodney, and sophomore Mikhail Williamson will be traveling to North Carolina to take on the East Region's best.
Meanwhile, the 4x400 meter relay team of sophomore Alistair McLean, Rodney, Petit-Homme, and junior Kervin Morgan will also look to compete, clocking in with the 19th fastest time in the nation this season, at 3:09.33.
The qualifiers from the East Region will join the top qualifiers from the West Region and will compete in the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.
