JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Five different players scored for the LIU Brooklyn women's soccer team, and the Blackbirds put together a dominant performance in a 5-1 victory over Saint Peter's on Friday afternoon at Jaroschak Field.
Senior Shino Kunisawa, junior Rayah Seckler, and freshmen Tori Shinkowitz and Chloe Amaradio each scored their first collegiate goals and freshman Jenn Peters also found the back of the net as LIU scored five times in one match for the first time since defeating Delaware State, 5-1, on Aug. 31, 2008.
The Blackbirds started the onslaught in the 16th minute when freshman Madison Gomez corralled the ball near midfield. Gomez found Kunisawa making a diagonal run from right to left, and Kunisawa one-timed a shot over the head of the oncoming goalkeeper to give LIU a 1-0 lead.
Nearly seven minutes later, Shinkowitz showed off her playmaking skills to set up the second tally. The freshman forward tracked down an errant cross, made a couple of nifty moves and crossed a perfect ball to Peters who headed home her second goal of the season to put the score at 2-0.
In the second half, Shinkowitz once again did damage and upped LIU's lead in the 61st minute. Gomez slid a pass to her classmate, who bent a shot from 25 yards into the upper-right corner of the goal for the 3-0 cushion.
Saint Peter's ended LIU's shutout bid moments later when Ashley Drozd found the back of the net following a scrum in front of the net in the 63rd minute.
LIU re-upped its lead in the 74th minute as freshman Alexandra Kidd fired a cross from the left side. The ball found junior Allison King, who headed the ball back in front of the net to Amaradio who blasted it home to make the score 4-1.
The final scoring play came in the 85th minute, as Seckler posted up her defender 10 yards from goal. Freshman Mia Chiatto crossed to her teammate, who turned and fired to the left side of goal for her first career goal.
LIU returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 15 at Harvard. The match is scheduled for a noon kickoff.
