BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn men's and women's track and field teams compete on familiar ground this week, as the Blackbirds take part in the Metropolitan Championships at The Amory this Friday, Jan. 31st.
The meet, which is the last for LIU before the Northeast Conference Indoor Championships, is the fifth at The Amory this season. The Blackbirds last traveled to Boston University for the Terrier Invitational.
The weekend in Boston was highlighted by Brendon Rodney's winning performance in the 200-meter dash. The junior completed the event in 20.78, which was a LIU Brooklyn record and the top time in the NEC.
Rodney's feat was not just limited to the northeast, however, as his time currently ranks second in the nation and fourth in the world.
Junior Katrina Anderson also left her mark in LIU Brooklyn annals on the women's side over the weekend. Anderson set a new school record in the 800-meter run for the second time in one week last Friday, running to a time of 2:09.96. She ranks 28th in the nation, and first in the NEC by more than three seconds.
LIU Brooklyn student-athletes lead the pack in the men's 200-meter dash following the Terrier Invitational. Dannish Walker-Khan is second behind Rodney at 21.74, while Darius Neely is fourth (22.05) and Mikhail Williamson is sixth (22.16).
Both the men's and women's 4x400 relay teams also put up some of the league's top performances over the weekend. The men's team of Alistair McLean, Mica-Jonathan Petit-Homme, Rodney and Andi Augustin is first in the conference by nearly six seconds. The women's team of Anderson, Josephine Watson, Alea Stevens and Anise Cuffee also ran to the top time in the NEC at 3:49.97.
Next week, the Blackbirds travel to Landover, Md. for the Northeast Conference Indoor Championships from Feb. 8-9.
