BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss in double overtime to Central Connecticut on Sunday afternoon. Jennfer Cafferky scored the game-winner for the Blue Devils off a corner kick in the 102nd minute, and knocked LIU out of contention for a Northeast Conference Tournament berth.
The match also marked the final home contest for seven LIU Brooklyn players: Taylor Berardicurti, Sydney Ciufo, Alex Farley, Caroline Kaplan, Allison King, Shannon O'Connor and Jen Spicer.
Kaplan had the first opportunity for either team in the seventh minute, but her shot from distance was saved by CCSU goalkeeper Nicki Turley. Following three straight shots from the Blue Devils, Kaplan had another chance in the 18th minute denied by Turley.
Possibly the best chance for LIU in the first half came in the 27th minute, when sophomore Madison Gomez flicked a header just wide of the far post. LIU Brooklyn led the battle in shots, 4-3, through the opening period.
The second half saw CCSU control much of possession and hold a 12-5 edge in shot attempts. Junior goalkeeper Jessica Montrose was up to the challenge, however, and made all three saves she needed to as the match went to overtime.
Central Connecticut had all four shots in the first overtime period and had an attempt in the second before Kelly Halligan took a corner kick with just over eight minutes remaining. The ball went into the middle of the six-yard box and found the head of Cafferky, who punched home the shot to give the visitors a road victory.
LIU Brooklyn concludes the 2014 season on Friday, Oct. 31 at Bryant. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
