DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The LIU Brooklyn women's golf team looks to defend its back-to-back titles this weekend at the Northeast Conference Golf Championships at the LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. The three-round tournament runs from April 25-27.
The tournament features all eight NEC teams, including Central Connecticut, Fairleigh Dickinson, Wagner, Robert Morris, Sacred Heart, Saint Francis U. and St. Francis Brooklyn.
The Blackbirds have won two consecutive titles in 2012 and 2013 under head coach Natalie Desjardins. LIU Brooklyn was picked to finish atop the field with seven first place votes in the preseason coaches' poll.
Last season, the team finished 12 strokes ahead of the field with a total score of 942, with Brianna Maynard, Alice Boothroyd and Marisol Doglioli all placing in the top-10. Fairleigh Dickinson's Mariana Juaristi was the individual champion, carding a 219 over the three rounds.
LIU Brooklyn has also enjoyed success this spring, finishing in the top-10 at all three tournaments, and in the top-five twice. The Blackbirds' best finish came at the Bucknell Invitational, placing second overall. Most recently, they finished fifth at the Brown Bear Invitational. The Blackbirds also finished ahead of four NEC squads this season.
At the Bucknell Invitational, Doglioli, the reigning NEC Rookie of the Year, led the team with a fourth-place finish. The sophomore also carded the low round during the second day of the Brown Bear Invitational.
Junior Cristina Felip, the 2012 individual champion and a 2013 All-NEC first team pick, had the best finish for the Blackbirds at the Brown Bear Invitational, tying for 11th with a score of 161.
Maynard, who was named All-NEC second team last season, also led the Blackbirds during the spring, finishing eighth out of 89 at the Pirate Invitational. The junior also tied for sixth at the Bucknell Invitational with Felip.
Boothroyd, another junior and 2013 All-NEC second team selection, finished in the top-25 twice this spring, including 21st at the Bucknell Invitational. Sophomore Victoria Fagan finished 37th at the Bucknell Invitational and was second for LIU behind Maynard at the Pirate Invitational. Senior Cristina Reynoso posted her best finish of the year at Bucknell as well, tying for 28th.
