BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn men's and women's track and field teams head out to Robert Morris for the 2014 Northeast Conference Outdoor track and field championships this Saturday and Sunday, May 3-4.
All 10 men's and women's NEC squads will convene at the RMU Island Sports Complex in Coraopolis, Pa.
The men will look to add their second championship trophy this season, having won the indoor championship earlier in February. The women placed second at the meet.
Mica-Jonathan Petit-Homme has been outstanding this spring, leading the conference in both the 400-meter dash and 400-meter hurdles by a considerable margin. His 400 hurdles time of 51.53 ranks 12th in the NCAA Division I East Region, and 26th overall, and is under the NEC meet record of 51.54.
Teammates Alistair McLean and Adam Walker-Khan also could add significant points in the event, as they currently have the third and fourth best times in the conference, respectively.
Walker-Khan was named the NEC Rookie of the Week three times in a row, continuously improving his time this season in the event. He also leads the conference in the long jump at 7.09m.
Junior Brendon Rodney will look to add some more medals to his collection, as he currently stands at the top of the league in both the 100 and 200-meter dash. His 200 time is 29th in the nation.
Petit-Homme, Rodney, Dannish Walker-Khan, and McLean also combined for the top 4x400 relay time in the conference by nearly five seconds. Eric Williams, Rodney, Walker-Khan and Mclean also hold the best league time in the 4x100 relay.
Also expected to contribute in the field events is Amir Armstrong, a two-time NEC Field Athlete of the Week this season. Armstrong bettered his triple jump mark at every event this spring, and has the top leap on the league performance list at 14.91m.
The women have depth in several events, including the 100 and 200-meter dash. In In the 100, Shanice Grant, Ja'Mesha Richard and Bryanna Williams are all ranked in the top-10, while Anise Cuffee, Josephine Watson and Shakia Williams are fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively in the 200.
Katrina Anderson, the indoor champion in the 800-meter run, could win the title in the outdoor event as well. The junior has the fastest time this season at 2:10.21, recorded at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational earlier this season.
The 100m hurdles will also be a strong event for LIU, with Richard leading the way. She has the second fast time in the conference at 14.12, while Thomas, Grant and Maria Luzon are also in the top-10.
In the relay events, Cuffee, Bryanna Williams, Richard and Watson lead the conference field in the 4x100 at 46.93. in the 4x400, the Blackbirds are just .06 off league-leading Mount St. Mary's.
In the jumps, Kyaira Wright-Harmon is in the top spot on the performance list with a leap of 1.75, while Richard is at the top of the pack the long jump and triple jump and ranked third for both.
