JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Juniors Brendon Rodney and Kemar Lewis added to the contingent of NCAA Championship qualifiers as each finished up preliminary round competiton in position to advance to Eugene, Oregon.
Rodney, who has been named an All-American in each of the last three track & field seasons, won the second heat of the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.53, bettering times from student-athletes that hailed from Auburn and Ohio State. Rodney's time of 20.58, which narrowly missed his personal best time of 20.41 set on April 5 in Moon Township, Pa., qualifies him for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships that will be held June 11-14 in Eugene, Oregon.
Lewis set a personal collegiate best of 2.14 meters (7.0 feet, 0.25 inches) in the high jump competition, clearing the first three heights of 2.00m, 2.05m and 2.10m on his first attempts before running into trouble. Lewis missed his first two jumps at 2.14 meters before a successful leap on his third and final attempt to advance him to Eugene.
In addition to Rodney and Lewis, sophomore Mica-Jonathan Petit-Homme will move on to the NCAA Championships in Oregon in the 400-meter hurdles.
Two relay teams also competed for the Blackbirds, each of which just missed out on advancing to nationals. The 4x100-meter dash closed in 16th place, just over two-tenths of a second from qualifying for nationals. The 4x400 relay team came even closer to advancing, finishing in 14th place.
