PHILADELPHIA - An early first-half goal by Saint Joseph's proved to be the difference as the Hawks defeated the LIU Brooklyn women's soccer team, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon. Junior Jessica Montrose recorded a career-high 11 saves in the loss for the Blackbirds, who fell to 0-7-0 on the year.
St. Joe's got on the board in the 17th minute as Shannon Mulvey tallied her first goal of the season. Off a corner kick by Olivia McEachern, McHale Perkins headed the ball into traffic in front of the Blackbirds' net where Mulvey collected it and deposited a shot past Montrose.
LIU Brooklyn had opportunities in the 23rd and 34th minutes, but shots from redshirt senior Jen Spicer and sophomore Jenn Peters were denied by Allison Ebling. In the 42nd minute, redshirt junior Allison King had a header shot on goal but Ebling was there again to take the 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second stanza, Peters and classmate Madison Gomez had chances that were off the mark, as the Hawks outshot the Blackbirds 16-2 in the period.
LIU concludes its three-match road swing on Friday, Sept. 19 at Seton Hall at 7:00 p.m.
