NEWARK, N.J. – The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team took part in its first dual match of the 2015 season, Saturday, January 21 against NJIT in Newark, N.J. The Blackbirds had a strong outing, sweeping the doubles point and winning five of the six singles matches.
 
In doubles, both of the Nos. 2 and 3 duos won by a score of 6-1. Sanne Louwers and Nancy Zonneveld defeated Ines Vujkovac and Alba Rosas Garcia in the No.2 spot, while Isabella Wagener and senior Brittany Thompson won in the No.3 spot over Sydney Nowak and Valerie Carroll. In the top doubles spot, Marine Dans and Caroline Koenigsfeldt also had a win, defeating Carolina Zanotta and Nathalie Habegger.
 
In singles action, LIU had five wins. Thompson had a resounding win in the No.6 singles spot, defeating Carroll, 6-0, 6-1. Zonneveld also had a straight set win, defeating Nowak, 6-4, 6-3 at No.5, while Dans downed Habegger, 6-0, 6-2 at No.2. Koenigsfeldt beat Vjujkovac in the No.3 spot, 6-4, 7-6 (7). And Louwers rounded out the wins, defeating Zanotta in the No.1 singles spot, 6-3, 7-5. NJIT's lone victory came at No.4, where Wagener battled all the way to a third set before falling to Rosas Garcia, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
 
Up next, the Blackbirds have their first home match of the season, hosting St. John's University, Wednesday, February 4 at 1 p.m.
